Scamp Grouper

One more species of grouper that you can find in our area is the Scamp Grouper. Similar to the other species of grouper, these too are born as females but can later become males. They are light grey or brown in color with reddish brown spots on their sides that form lines. They have some yellow around the corners of their mouths and the large adult grouper have elongated caudal-fin rays.

Scamp grouper are often found around offshore reefs in Alabama Gulf Coast waters. This species spawn in the late spring and prefer small fish, squid, and crustaceans.
